darklit was a beats/production duo in the early-mid 2010's. violet w-p + ben shmidt. we were in high school, seattle & bellingham, learning by doing. we met in an edm production facebook group some internet friends & i started when we were tweens, which turned into a kind of edm-deep-state career incubator that led to some wildly unexpected shifts in the landscape. it was the soundcloud golden age; we built an audience largely by accident, finding ourselves in the midst of a soon-to-evaporate scene. darklit lasted for a few years before events like the closing of Low End Theory, the rise of "lo-fi beats to study to," tragic early losses, a generation of internet music kids growing up & selling their sp-404's, and, of course, the big messy american timeline shift of 2016 all invited some life-re-prioritizing. it also just kind of naturally ended once we went to college. some of the music is good, some of it is not.
